During the First Manassas, the Union Army was initially succsessful with a flanking manueuver. A flanking maneuver is when you attack the opposing force from multiple sides. If the flanking maneuver is successful, the enemy will be surrounded.

The Confederate Army had a different tactic. The confederates would be reinforced when their fellow soldiers would arrive by train from the Shenandoah Valley.
